Città di Castello

Located at the borderline between Umbria and Tuscany, this is a flatland city boasting important traces of Renaissance culture. Several museums are to be found at Città di Castello,  namely the ones dedicated to the contemporary artist Alberto Burri.

Gabriotti Square: the medieval  Cathedral, the 14th-century Podestà Palace and the Bishop’s Tower are all overlooking this central square

Painting Gallery: It is the  second largest collection in the Region. Housed inside the elegant Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, it display works by such artists as Raphael and Luca Signorelli

City tour: It includes the churches of San Francesco, San Domenico and Santa Maria delle Grazie

Palazzo Albizzini Foundation*: this  Renaissance building houses the artworks donated by Alberto Burri to his hometown. Burri was one of the major  Italian  painters to express informal art

Former Tobacco-Drying rooms*: the largest and  most recent canvases and works by Burri are on display in this impressive ex-industrial plant

Cathedral Museum*: It is worth visiting this museum if not for  the so called “Tesoro di Canoscio”,  a rare  set  of  objects for liturgical use  dating from  the 6th century a.D.

Take time to visit the local workshops where the traditional woven fabrics are still made at the hand  loom
